Dinner and drinks on the Midtown roof in Masaki

A ladies' night in Dar es Salaam usually means a midweek or late-week evening when a venue puts on something for women — drinks offers, a DJ, a better atmosphere — and the room fills up accordingly. Most of them are on the Msasani peninsula, where the city's nightlife lives.

Full disclosure, this is us. Midtown runs a ladies' night on the roof of Magesa Ocean View Apartments in Masaki. Rooftop, open on all four sides, a rum-led cocktail list, Jamaican and Swahili plates made for sharing, and live music on the roof.

Message or call to book a table for the group, and ask what is on that week.

If you get there earlier in the week, happy hour runs Monday to Thursday, 3:00 to 7:00pm, with signature cocktails at TSH 10,000.

Elsewhere

  • Samaki Samaki, the Masaki and Oyster Bay bar and grill, is known for "Siku ya Warembo" — roughly, "beautiful ladies' day" — later in the week, with music and a big crowd.
  • Havoc, in the city centre, is a club with a different theme most nights of the week, including ladies' nights.
  • The Slipway area has several bars within walking distance of each other, which makes it easy to move on.

Venues change their nights and offers without much notice, so check Instagram in the same week rather than trusting an old post.

A good night, planned

  • Eat first. Dinner on the peninsula, then on to a bar or club. Kitchens close well before the music stops.
  • Go as a group, leave as a group. Agree the plan for getting home before the first drink.
  • Bolt or Uber door to door. Do not walk, even short distances, and do not take street taxis or motorbike taxis.
  • Watch your drink. As anywhere.
  • Phone away on the street. Snatching from passing motorbikes is the most common problem on the peninsula.
  • Dress is relaxed on the peninsula. Smart casual works nearly everywhere.
