An evening on the Midtown roof in Masaki, Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the home of Bongo Flava, the Swahili pop that took over East Africa, and the city has a long history of live bands, from the dansi orchestras of the 1960s to the taarab singers of the coast. The live scene today is smaller than the club scene, but it is real, and it is mostly on the Msasani peninsula.

  • House of Culture and Dar Live — larger performances.

Check each venue's social media for its current programme.

  • Sauti za Busara, Zanzibar — 19 to 21 March 2027. See our Sauti za Busara guide.

The full calendar is in festivals in Dar es Salaam.
