Halloween in Dar es Salaam: Parties, Costumes and Where to Go

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026. Where to celebrate in Dar es Salaam, how to get a costume made in a few days, and how to get home safely afterwards.

Evening falling over Masaki, Dar es Salaam

Halloween is not a Tanzanian holiday, and nobody in Dar es Salaam will knock on your door asking for sweets. But the city likes a reason to dress up and go out, and over the last few years the last night of October has turned into one of the more fun party nights on the Msasani peninsula.

In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, which settles the question of whether to go.

Where to celebrate

Midtown, Masaki

Date
Saturday 31 October 2026
Area
Masaki
Type
Rooftop restaurant and lounge
Book
WhatsApp or phone

Full disclosure, this is us. Midtown is running a Halloween night on the roof of Magesa Ocean View Apartments in Masaki, with the Jamaican and Swahili kitchen and a rum-led bar. A rooftop open on four sides, a full moon's worth of dark sky, and a room full of costumes is about as good a Halloween setting as Dar has.

Tables go quickly on a Saturday, and faster on this one. Message or call to book, and ask about the programme.

The rest of the peninsula

Masaki and Oyster Bay are where Dar's nightlife lives, and on a Halloween Saturday many of the bars and lounges there run themed nights. The clubs in the area fill after midnight, so the usual plan is dinner and drinks somewhere first, then on to dance. Check each venue's Instagram in the week before, since that is where Dar venues announce their nights.

Getting a costume

This is where Dar beats most cities: you can have a costume made.

  • Find a fundi (tailor). They are everywhere, and many work from small shops around Kariakoo. Bring a photo, agree a price and a date, and expect a costume in a few days.
  • Buy the fabric first. Kariakoo's fabric stalls have everything, from bold kitenge prints to plain black cotton for a witch, a ghost or a vampire.
  • Accessories and face paint can be found in the shopping malls, including Mlimani City.
  • Start by mid-October. Good tailors get busy, and alterations take time.

Keep your phone away and your bag in front of you in Kariakoo, which is the busiest crowd in the city. Go on a weekday late morning. There is more on that in our guide to the areas to be careful in.

Getting there and back

  • Bolt door to door. Do not walk around in costume after dark, anywhere.
  • Masks off in the car and on the street. A masked figure at night draws the wrong kind of attention.
  • Leave valuables at home. Costumes rarely have good pockets.
  • Book your ride home early. Cars get scarce on the peninsula late on a Saturday.
  • Bring repellent. October evenings are warm, and the mosquitoes come out with the dark.

And after Halloween

The season runs straight on into the city's big December nights. We have written up Christmas in Dar es Salaam and New Year's Eve in Dar es Salaam, and both need booking early.

Common questions

Is Halloween celebrated in Dar es Salaam?
Not as a local tradition, but yes as a night out. Halloween has no roots in Tanzanian culture, so you will not see trick-or-treating in the streets. What you will find is a growing party scene on the Msasani peninsula, where bars, lounges and rooftops run costume nights for a mixed crowd of Tanzanians, expats and visitors. In 2026, 31 October falls on a Saturday, which makes it a proper night out.
Where can I get a Halloween costume in Dar es Salaam?
Have one made. Tailors (fundi) all over the city, and especially around Kariakoo, will sew a costume from a photo in a few days for a modest price, and Kariakoo's fabric stalls have everything from kitenge prints to plain black cotton. Shopping malls like Mlimani City sell some accessories, face paint and party items. Start by mid-October, because good tailors get busy.
