Late-Night Food in Dar es Salaam: What's Open After Dark
Where to eat late in Dar es Salaam: a 24-hour coffee shop, charcoal grills that start at dusk, chipsi mayai stalls, and the peninsula kitchens that stay open late.

Dar es Salaam's nightlife runs late, and its kitchens do not always keep up. Bars stay open past midnight and clubs until three or later, but most restaurants have stopped cooking well before the music peaks. Knowing where to eat late saves the end of a good night.
The late-night classics
Chipsi mayai — chips fried into an omelette, with pili pili — is the city's answer to late-night hunger, and it was invented on these streets. Evening machinga stalls cook it to order, along with mishkaki skewers and mandazi. Choose a busy stall and eat it hot. There is more in our Swahili food guide.
Where to go
- Kaffé_Koffee
- Opened as the first 24-hour coffee shop
- Mamboz
- Grills from about 6pm
- Karambezi
- Closes when the last guests leave
- Kaffé Koffee — launched as the city's first 24-hour coffee shop, with branches on Kaunda Drive in Oysterbay and on Singh Road. Coffee, cheesecake and something to soak up the evening. Check current hours at each branch.
- Mamboz Corner BBQ, Kisutu — charcoal-grilled mishkaki from about 6pm, at tables by the road. There are branches in Upanga and Mikocheni.
- Karambezi Café, Sea Cliff — opens at 6am and serves until the last guests have finished.
- The Slipway — several restaurants and bars together on Msasani Bay, and among the last to wind down on the peninsula.
- Havoc, city centre — a club that serves food alongside the cocktails.
Midtown, Masaki
- Area
- Masaki
- Type
- Rooftop restaurant and lounge
- Kitchen
- Jamaican and Swahili
Full disclosure, this is us. Midtown is a rooftop in Masaki with a Jamaican and Swahili kitchen: jerk chicken with rice and peas, mishikaki, oxtail, and a sharing platter for the table. It is where to eat properly before the night moves on. Message ahead for the kitchen's hours that night.
After midnight, sensibly
- Eat before the club, not after. It is easier.
- Bolt between venues, and home. Do not walk the peninsula late.
- Busy stalls, hot food.
- Carry small notes. Street stalls rarely have change.
- Kariakoo trades 24 hours, but don't go at night. It is not a place for visitors after dark.
