Dar es Salaam's rain rarely lasts all day, but in the long rains it comes down hard, floods roads and cancels boats to the islands. Here is how to use a wet day.
Museums
- National_Museum
- Opened 1934
- Village_Museum
- Founded 1967
- National Museum and House of Culture, city centre — Tanzania's largest museum, opened in 1934, and the best background for the whole country.
- Village Museum — founded in 1967, with traditional houses from across Tanzania. It is mostly outdoors, so save it for a dry spell.
Check current hours and fees before you go, since published figures vary.

Cinema and malls
- Century Cinemax, Mlimani City (Sam Nujoma Road) — three screens, including one billed as the largest in East Africa, showing Hollywood and Bollywood releases.
- Mlimani City and The Slipway — shops, cafés and food under cover.
Cafés
Settle in with a coffee: Kaffé Koffee, Wild Flour and The Ridge Cafe. More in workspaces for remote workers.
A long lunch
Rain is a good excuse for a slow meal:
- Midtown, Masaki — full disclosure, this is us. Jerk chicken or gumbo and live music once the storm passes. There is wifi if you want to work, and happy hour Monday to Thursday, 3–7pm.
- Chef's Pride, city centre — Swahili and Indian food.
When the rain stops
- Roads flood fast. Wait before driving, and allow extra time for Bolt.
- Boats to Bongoyo may not run. Check at The Slipway.
- Mosquitoes follow the rain. Use repellent.

Finish The Day On The Roof
Sunset seating in Masaki, Jamaican and Swahili cooking, and the last of the light over the city. Message or call to book.
