Sunset over Masaki from the Midtown roof

Date night in Dar es Salaam comes with an advantage most cities do not have: a sunset over the water at almost the same time every evening, all year. Plan the table around that and you are most of the way there.

Midtown, Masaki

Area
Masaki
Type
Rooftop
View
Open on all four sides
Music
Live music

Full disclosure, this is us. Midtown is on the roof of Magesa Ocean View Apartments in Masaki, open to the air on all four sides, with live music, a rum-led cocktail list and a Jamaican and Swahili kitchen. Escovitch fish, rum cake, and the light going at half past six.

Planning something special? Tell us when you book, and we will seat you well and have a cake ready if you want one.

Sunset from the Midtown roof

By the water

  • Karambezi Café, Sea Cliff — an ocean terrace above the rocks at the tip of the peninsula, with a 180-degree view.
  • The Waterfront, The Slipway — tables on Msasani Bay. Ask for the edge.
  • Thai Kani, The Slipway — family-owned Thai and Japanese since 2013, ocean views, open noon to 10:30pm.

Above the city

  • Akemi Revolving Restaurant — high in the Golden Jubilee Towers, turning slowly past the harbour and the skyline. Smart casual, and book ahead.

Making a proposal

  • Tell the restaurant when you book. Ask for the best table and a quiet moment.
  • Time it for sunset.
  • Daytime option: Bongoyo Island, twenty-five minutes by boat from The Slipway, is nearly empty on weekdays. See things to do.
  • Want a sunset boat? Dhow cruises are a Zanzibar speciality; see our Zanzibar day trip.

A good evening, planned

  1. Drinks at 5:30 somewhere with a view. See happy hour.
  2. Dinner at 6, so the sunset lands mid-meal.
  3. Live music afterwards. See live music in Dar.
  4. Bolt home.

Common questions

What is the most romantic restaurant in Dar es Salaam?
It depends on the view you want. For sunset, Midtown's open rooftop in Masaki or Karambezi Café's ocean terrace at Sea Cliff. For the water, The Waterfront or Thai Kani at The Slipway. For the city lights, Akemi, the revolving restaurant in the Golden Jubilee Towers.
Where can I propose in Dar es Salaam?
At sunset, somewhere with an open view. A rooftop table or an ocean terrace works well if you tell the restaurant in advance so they can seat you well. For a daytime proposal, Bongoyo Island's quiet beach is twenty-five minutes by boat from The Slipway.
