Dar es Salaam does birthdays well: warm evenings, rooftops and ocean terraces, and food made for sharing. The one thing to plan properly is the size of the table, because the best spots fill up at weekends.
Midtown, Masaki
- Area
- Masaki
- Cake
- Order from us
- Groups
- Sharing platters
- Music
- Live music
Full disclosure, this is us. Midtown is a rooftop in Masaki, open on all four sides, and it is built for a birthday:
- The cake: order it from us when you book. There's nothing to carry across town and nothing to hide in the car.
- For the table: the Midtown Platter and Caribbean Platter at TSH 100,000 each, plus jerk chicken, mishikaki, oxtail and gumbo.
- To drink: a rum-led cocktail list, and happy hour Monday to Thursday, 3–7pm, if the celebration starts early.
- Live music on the roof.
Message or call to book, and tell us the numbers and the occasion.

Other good birthday tables
Karambezi Café, Sea Cliff
A 180-degree view of the ocean from the tip of the peninsula, with an outside deck, an upstairs deck, a lounge and a bar. It hosts private events and parties of different sizes.
The Waterfront, The Slipway
On Msasani Bay, with sunset over the water and the rest of the Slipway around it for afterwards.
Thai Kani, The Slipway
Thai and Japanese food with ocean views, open noon to 10:30pm, and well suited to a group that wants to share.
Mamboz Corner BBQ, Kisutu
For a birthday that is all about the food and not about the tablecloth: charcoal mishkaki at roadside tables, from around 6pm. More in our Swahili food guide.
Planning a birthday dinner
- Book early. A week ahead for a group, more for a Friday or Saturday.
- Sort the cake when you book.
- Agree the bill up front. Ask whether the venue can split it, or pick one person to pay.
- Timing: book for about 6pm to catch the sunset at 6:15–6:45.
- Transport: Bolt for everyone, and a plan for getting home.
- Going on afterwards? See late-night food and live music in Dar.

Finish The Day On The Roof
Sunset seating in Masaki, Jamaican and Swahili cooking, and the last of the light over the city. Message or call to book.
Common questions
- Where is a good place for a birthday dinner in Dar es Salaam?
- Midtown's rooftop in Masaki is set up for it: you can order the birthday cake directly from the restaurant, there are sharing platters for groups, and there is live music. Karambezi Café at Sea Cliff hosts private events on its decks. For a sunset setting, The Waterfront at The Slipway is right on the bay.
- Can I get a birthday cake at the restaurant?
- At Midtown, yes: you can order the cake directly from us, so you do not need to bring one. Ask when you book. Elsewhere, ask the restaurant in advance, because some allow outside cakes and some do not.
